THE EVENT

The race often sees a variety of conditions which means that boats of all shapes and sizes are in with a chance of winning the race with over 1,400 entries and 16,000 competitors. This makes it one of the largest sporting events in the country and one of the largest yacht races in the world.

The Race itself is also only part of the appeal, Cowes and the Solent offer a fantastic bustling atmosphere with live music and beer tents. Cowes knows how to turn into a Festival venue and never disappoints!

Onboard our boats, we will aim to be very competitive in IRC class against many other identical boats and those of a similar speed.

We hope to be the first of the sailing schools over the finish line as we were in 2019!

We have completed the Round the Island Race many times and, using our experience of what has worked well for us in the past, we have put together a package to ensure we are as competitive as possible.

ITINERARY

  • Meet in Hamble in the morning to get a full day of training around the Solent for the day and pick our tactics for the start line. Then either back to Hamble or over to Cowes for the evening and a team meal.

  • Early morning off the dock to make the start. The race can be as quick as 7 hours and as long as 12 depending on the weather. Back into Cowes for the night of celebrating

  • You can depart from Cowes directly or come for a chilled cruise back to Hamble maybe via Osbourn bay for a picnic and a dip of the weather suits

  • The Round the Island Race is open to anyone with some experience in sailing and who would put themselves as a competent crew or above. Ideally, you’ll have past racing experience but not essential. At LSS we believe the attitude to contribute and learn is the most important.

  • The event starts in Hamble on the morning of Friday and until the late afternoon on the Sunday

  • You will be racing on one of LSS’s regular boats, most likely Kindred Spirit, a race-prepped Sigma 38, but others are possible too.

    The boats are:

    Kindred Spirit - Sigma 38

    Kotari - Jeanneau 49

    Cougar - Reflex 38

    Red Hawk - First 36.7

  • The boats are based on the River Hamble.

Kindred Spirit is at Deacons Boatyard, in Bursledon.

We will be berthed in Cowes on the Friday and Saturday evenings however.

  • The Solent, which the River Hamble is on the Northern edge of, is the perfect training area between Southampton Water and the Isle of Wight.

Notorious for consistent winds, wicked tides, and a gorgeous variety of harbours, rivers and anchorages to visit.

During the Round the Island Race, you’ll be visiting Cowes but you’ll sail around the whole Island.

  • During the event, accommodation on the boat is provided. However, if you’d like to book accommodation in Yarmouth for Friday and Saturday nights this is quite common, however. it will be busy so we recommend checking out options ASAP.

Anywhere within a 15-minute walk from Yarmouth harbour would be appropriate.

  • If you’ve enjoyed it and want to continue to build your racing skills, we’d recommend joining us for the Taittinger or Dartmouth Regattas later in the summer. Maybe you’d like to try something more offshore like a cross-channel racing weekend?

  • We will be in marinas and harbours every day so most likely so you won’t need to shower on the boat. The boats are fitted with a functional toilet, sink, showers and kitchen (galley) for cooking.

  • Please take a look at our kit list here.

Excellent cruising and racing

I have been sailing with LSS/Ruaraidh a fair few times now; both racing in the UK and cruising in the Med. Both are well organised and a great value for money. The cruising is relaxed and very enjoyable. I have been to Croatia and Sicily, on very comfortable yachts and had a wonderful time. The racing…
