THE EVENT
This year is the 39th edition of the World Cruising Club’s Atlantic Rally for Cruisers and LSS are joining the racing division onboard Kotari, a beautiful Jeanneau 49!
The first ever ocean crossing rally was the ARC in 1986, and since then it has grown to attract over 200 boats and 1200 sailors each year. It’s about 2,700 NM across the Atlantic from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia. The ARC attracts families, racers and cruising couples, crossing the Atlantic together but having their own adventures.
THE PLAN
Arrival:
The ARC begins with two weeks of pre-departure activities ashore in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. We plan to arrive for preparations from the 16th and all crew will need to meet there by the 20th for final preparation and training.
The Rally:
Our race starts on the 24th November, and from Las Palmas we will race across the Atlantic sailing over 2,700 NM to St. Lucia. The duration will of course depend heavily on the conditions but we expect it to take Kotari close to 3 weeks.
Arrival in St. Lucia:
Upon arrival in Saint Lucia yachts are greeted on the dock with a rum punch or a chilled beer, and we will stay for a couple of days to enjoy the atmosphere and celebrate the achievement of crossing an ocean on a small sailboat with the other rally participants.
Departure:
Return flights to the UK depart from St. Lucia, we will depart around December 15th and be home in plenty of time for the holidays!
Good to know
We would like to have a chat about your experience and the event as this is quite the adventure, so please do get in touch before you register and commit a deposit.
You’ll need to arrange your flights into Gran Canaria and out of St. Lucia.
Accommodation on the boat is only possible while racing, beginning on 24th November.
In case there are boat chores required ahead of the race, you might be asked for a little support by your skipper. It would be great if you could help out if necessary.
As a long-distance race, be aware that you will be operating a watch system. This normally means that a crew is split up and alternates being on / off watch. Often it's 4hr shifts with shorter shifts from 16.00-18.00 and 18.00-20.00 to ensure that you are not always on watch at the same time of day/night.

Previous experience required:
This race is not for the faint-hearted. It’s a once in a lifetime challenge and should be respected accordingly. Your experience is not as important as your attitude.
Ideally, you will have past yacht racing experience but it isn’t absolutely necessary, also a certain level of strength and fitness is required as this race is both physically and mentally challenging.
Experience of spinnakers/gennakers is handy
