About

The Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) TransAtlantic race is the longest and most recent addition to RORCs offshore racing programme. The Race starts on Saturday 7th January 2023 from the Calero Marinas, Puerto Calero, and finishes with a fantastically Caribbean and friendly welcome in the Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada.

The racecourse is 2995 nautical miles starting by navigating the Canary Islands and their famously feisty acceleration zones before heading out across the pond (Atlantic) and as always, giving the navigators the question of sailing the Great Circle (the fastest route represented by the dashed arc on the RORC Map above) or heading South earlier and into the steadier and more reliable trade winds…

This race attracts a diverse fleet of boats from the Grand Prix record setters to those wanting the challenge of taking part for the first time and doing so in competitive company.

This race contributes to the RORC’s Season Points Championship which also includes the Caribbean 600 and the Fastnet race which LSS will also be taking part in in 2023!

  • With a large focus of an event like this being on safety, the experience of the crew must meet a minimum requirement of 50% of the crew having sailed 500nm offshore in the last 18 months. We intend on sailing the boats to Lanzarote in Autumn/Winter 2022 which will provide the opportunity for this experience as we would like to have 100% of the crew meeting this minimum requirement.

Offshore experience is very much beneficial and booking a place on this race gets you on one of the training legs from the UK > Spain, and Portugal > Lanzarote.

However, our whole idea is to take amateur crews and have a jolly old time while improving our skills!

  • ✅ Safety First

We maintain a high safety record and ultimately the skippers have the ultimate authority to take decisions with the crew’s safety as their number one priority.

    🐬 No Fun No Point

We are a big fan of a stress-free and happy learning environment onboard. We always encourage a relaxed and chilled approach to all the crews learning and sailing.

    ✅ Team Effort

Although we welcome all levels of sailing experience on most of our sailing events, we encourage joining with the view of being part of a team and everyone taking part and pulling their weight.

  • Travel is pretty straightforward to Lanzarote and Grenada with direct international flights from the UK and other major Airports. Options via the U.S are plentiful as well for returning from Grenada.
